The Ultimate Masterpiece: The David Statue

The stature and prominence, the importance and influence of Michelangelo's David statue may surprise you!

The David statue tells a story, yes, and that story is here.  But the statue has his OWN story to tell, one that not many people know.

I have attempted to tell the David's story, both in history and all the way through to modern pop culture, as a resource for you.  I hope that you not only find out how fascinating Michelangelo's most famous statue is, but that for school and education purposes, or even pure appreciation, this will be an entertaining and enlightening page.

"In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it."—Michelangelo

EVERYTHING David.  You'll see plenty of him because there are lots of pictures.  Science.  Critique.  Influence.  Pop Culture. Free David stuff, a terrific FREE Michelangelo ebook and David computer games.

There is also a great surprise in here, some pictures after his bath.  Be sure to check out that gallery!

About David

No Statue more Perfect

"In it may be seen most beautiful contours of legs, with attachments of limbs and slender outlines of flanks that are divine; nor has there ever been seen a pose so easy, or any grace to equal that in this work, or feet, hands and head so well in accord, one member with another, in harmony, design, and excellence of artistry. And, of a truth, whoever has seen this work need not trouble to see any other work executed in sculpture, either in our own or in other times, by no matter what craftsman."

Beautiful David!

What Do Women Want??????

Women in all ages, of all ages, find David gorgeous. Michelangelo captures women's ideals in a man, that in human beings only lasts a few years.
When all you need to wear is a slingshot
& David the Macho Man

The men say, however, "David represents an uncircumcised young man, and the discussion elaborates on whether Michelangelo's decision to portray his subject in all his intact nature may have been influenced by local church leaders at the time" David is not Circumcised
And, of course, Why isn't David Better Endowed?

David's Hand

A Master of Human Anatomy

It is useful to take the time to look closely at David, in his minute details, and to ponder how lifelike are the qualities that Michelangelo was able to carve into that cold, hard marble. The right hand is actually bigger than the left which draws attention to the stone he is holding, the power of his posture, his intention, and the drama about to unfold for David.

Most of us couldn't get such lifelike features as blood veins and Skin texture from a more forgiving medium such as clay.

Terribilita

Huge and Powerful

Michelangelo preferred the 'terribilita' style (though not the label) in his sculptures and painting. This style evokes in a very real way strength, power, and awe. He used all of its aspects in a classical sense to evoke that feeling. The David is Hellenistic in sculptural style and 'feel'.

Like much about David that is different than what it would seem to be, Michelangelo compensated for the enormous size of David sculpturally, so his head isn't exactly according to the 'Golden Section'

An Objectivist Take on David

Il Gigante

In The World of Art, Robert Payne wrote: "The David expressed a pagan reliance on strength, cunning, and intelligence. A muscular youth, with thick curling hair falling over the nape of his neck, with an expression of great power and refinement, he stands there like a god who has descended to earth in order to chastise the mighty and to tear kings from their thrones. His brows are knit, his eyes are watchful, the youthful body stands in absolute composure, conscious of its own strength, its own power to accomplish whatever the intelligence demands. . . . He is more Apollo than David, and belongs more to Greece than to the Renaissance. Here Michelangelo stated once and for all, in a manner he would never surpass, the ideal inhabitant of the visionary earth."

Five hundred years later, our "most compelling, richly imaginative artist" gives us bewildering statues of tapioca and Vaseline. And five hundred years hence, we may marvel at how far we have fallen since his time. Roger Donway Article

Shepherd David Inspired Michelangelo

Soon to be King of Israel

David destroyed Goliath by virtue of his faith in God, who was with David during this very unevenly matched battle, a giant (about 9 feet tall) Goliath against a young and inexperienced David, the shepherd boy. David killed Goliath with just one perfectly aimed stone from his sling shot. Biblical Story of David and Goliath

Michelango sculpted the young David just prior to this face-off with the giant Goliath, sling over his shoulder, watching his enemy's approach.

This story has influenced kings, politicians, slaves, citizens, artists and musicians for over 3000 years.

Michelangelo's David, however, has proven itself to be the most revolutionary, beautiful (David and Human Proportions) and long lasting of any of those inspirations, continuing to retell that story newly every time a person looks on him.

David wrote the Book of Psalms

David: Always an Inspiration

David is still a significant part of our daily lives, if we love beautiful poetry, amazing songs, profound and honest prayer. For 3000 years, the Psalms, Tehillim in Hebrew, have been prayed by the Jewish people as their treasured heritage. In Christianity, the book of Psalms is called the 'Psalter' and has been treasured as the 'Prayer of the Holy Spirit.' It has a premier place in illuminated manuscripts, hand painted bibles that were necessary before Gutenberg. Since the beginning of the Church, she prays the psalms at every mass, and has prayed the psalter 7 times daily, in the liturgy of the hours, also known as the Divine Office.

David's Nudity is Scriptural!

Thanks to Guy Shaked for pointing this out!

Guy Shaked states: "it could be demonstrated that the nudity of Michelangelo's David is a possible interpretation of the biblical text describing the biblical hero and future king in the moment before the start of the fight with Goliath. David's nudity facing Goliath is explained as a result of verses 1 Samuel 17:38-39. Saul supplied David with a warrior's dress and David wore it. However he could not walk with it and therefore took it off. It is most likely that David wore the warrior's clothes instead of his own shepherd's clothes and not on his clothes. Therefore, it could be assumed that after David took off the warrior's clothes he remained nude (however the Bible does not mention this), for it doesn't state specifically that he re-wore his own clothes. It is important to understand that the artist, who was looking for an excuse to depict a beautiful nude young male hero, could, eagerly adopt such an interpretation of the Bible, while not the most probable scenario of the battle. The idea that David was nude during the battle might be further supported by the fact that Jonathan, king Saul's son, gave all his clothes and his armor and sword to David to wear after his victory (1 Samuel, 17:57-18:4). David's nudity at this time of the battle is reconfirmed by Michelangelo's sketch of the statue, depicting the victorious David, where Goliath's head is visible under the Hero's feet, and a slingshot is in David's hand (below him). The nudity gives in turn added meaning to Goliath's threat that he would feed David's flesh to the birds and beasts (1 Samuel, 17:44), for David's bare flesh was in his direct sight. The figure of David enabled Michelangelo to depict therefore a beautiful nude youth, beautiful because the bible states that David was most handsome "had beautiful eyes and was nice to look at" (yafe enaim vetov roi) in 1 Samuel 16:12"

Revolutionary Michelangelo & His David

Never depicted in this way before!

Here you see Donatello's David, who, like all other artists, had painted or sculpted David as an almost pre-pubescent boy, impossibly defeating the giant Goliath. Sword in hand, having decapitated his opponent, it seems the artists had thought the real story was God had accomplished that victory nearly alone.

Michelangelo, however, dignified the story of David, with a greater vision of man: a noble, loyal and capable young man, with a deep faith, working with his Beloved God to accomplish great things for God's people.

A more significant interpretation is the nobility in working with God, giving our best to Him, knowing where our strength truly lies...

Colossal David

It is hard to imagine, just by looking at a picture, how genuinely huge the David is. Here you see someone examining David. Probably David's forearm is larger than this person.

The magnitude of this 'small warrior against the giant Goliath' has been, by Michelangelo, turned on its head, in a way. Now, David is the giant and the giant he fought is perhaps merely a story ....

Goliath Artifacts

Yet, maybe the story of David and Goliath is not a myth. Archaeological evidence, once again, confirms biblical evidence; in this case, the existence of Goliath, in the area identified in Holy Scripture.

David, the Drama King!

The Life of David Novel by Joseph Heller

"Joseph Heller's God Knows -- a gloriously anachronistic first person account of the life of King David -- starts with David explaining why he's got the "the best story in the Bible." From the young, slightly-built shepherd boy who can play the lyre well enough to relieve King Saul's headaches, David becomes the hero who slays the giant Goliath , and eventually, a king who fights, writes, loves, and mourns with charismatic spectacle. As he himself points out, with Heller's help, "I have suicide, regicide, patricide, homicide, fratricide, infanticide, adultery, incest, hanging, and more decapitations than just Saul's. I had sons. I had concubines. I had a son who went unto my concubines in broad daylight on the roof of my palace."

And this is just the start of it." David the Drama King

Beautiful David!

Really Fabulous

2006 - DAVID BY MICHELANGELO

On 1501, Michelangelo recived the official contract to undertake the task for a David statue. He chose to use a single piece of marble, a piece which was considered useless by everyone else according to legend. Michelangelo worked on the biblical hero for a little more than 3 years, revolutionizing the traditional concept of David icon. He portrayed David during the moments before his battle with Goliath rather than the triumphant moments after the battle as David is traditionally depicted.

Unexpected reactions to modern art placed near him...

Here in Florence, Dr. Magherini has turned her attention to the most famous nude: Michelangelo's "David." She is studying reactions to the "David," and has been looking particularly at a recent exhibition in which five modern works were displayed aside the classical beauty of the "David." The exhibition provoked "particularly violent and exaggerated reactions to the contemporary works."

Michelangelo Buonarroti was born March 6, 1475, in the small village of Caprese near Arezzo. He is considered to be a Florentine, and in fact, considered himself to be from Florence, because he had a great love for that beautiful city.

Michelangelo & Anatomy Studies

The David's Beauty & Perfection started somewhere!

Michelangelo (1475-1564) had a life-long interest in anatomy that began with his participation in public dissections in his early teens, when he joined the court of Lorenzo de Medici and was exposed to its physician-philosopher members. By the age of 18, he began to perform his own dissections. His early anatomic interests were revived later in life when he aspired to publish a book on anatomy for artists and to collaborate in the illustration of a medical anatomy text that was being prepared by the Paduan anatomist Realdo Colombo (1516-1559). He spent so much time with corpses, in dissection and study, that he frequently became ill.

The Belvedere Torso

Musculature & Structure

The Belvedere Torso, now housed in the Vatican Museums, was very much admired by Michelangelo and inspired such things as the painting of Christ and 19 other figures in the Last Judgment, in the Sistine Chapel.

Michelangelo was present when this piece was found in the ground, brought to Pope Julius II, and set up in the Belvedere Court. Reportedly he spent much time examining and drawing it, and he used that form in his art for the rest of his life.

The Inferior Marble of David

Il Gigante, damaged and unwanted for ages.

In a beautiful essay, Crystal Lee writes: "The enormous marble block that Michelangelo's David was carved out of was termed 'Il Gigante' by contemporaries and was originally acquired in 1464 for Agostino di Duccio, who conspicuously failed to produce the originally commissioned David. The giant marble block, who Vasari and Condivi say was considerably damaged by Agostino, remained unfinished for nearly forty years in the Office of Works of Florence Cathedral. According to Vasari, the triumphant young Michelangelo, upon returning to Rome, offered to carve the mutilated block without adding extra pieces and proclaimed of his audacious project, "David with his sling and I with my bow - Michelangelo." The bow refers to the sculptor's drill, and the verse shows that Michelangelo thought of himself as doing battle with the damaged block with nothing other than his own skill and courage, just as David overcame Goliath with just a sling and rock.

Poor David hasn't had it all easy

all that and now, experts

David has certainly had his physical challenges.

He has been struck by lightning (at the base) in 1512.

His arm was broken off by rioters in 1527, requiring a new one to be made, (though the original pieces were kept). Another historic case of effective political action, I guess. Reminds me of those ancient buddhas which the Taliban Islamic Militias destroyed.

A broken finger which was repaired in 1813, whereupon he was coated in wax.

A broken toe was fixed in 1843 which was the occasion for his bath in hydrochloric acid (described as barbaric- who would want a bath like that?)

In 1991 his toe was smashed with a hammer by a jealous and temperamental Italian artist (who is currently working at the museum, cleaning around David once more).

It took eleven years for them to fight it out about how to wash the David. We wonder how long it would take to have any new damage repaired?

More Criticism of David

The David Statue invites scrutiny!

"There was only one error. There was a hollow where there should have been a muscle on the right side of the back," But Michelangelo was aware of the flaw, writing in a letter that a defect in the marble block forced him to leave out that muscle, Gulisano said. Missing Muscle

David Statue Back View Photo

A Good Profile is Everything (except for the rest of him)

David Squints. Perhaps 300 years without sunglasses?

Quote: "Michelangelo's David, for centuries the epitome of male beauty, has a flaw. He squints. The discovery was made during an exercise to produce a digital version of all Michelangelo's sculptures and buildings by scanning them with a laser. The result shows the gaze directions of his eyes diverge. This is shown clearly in the full frontal image of David's face, which cannot normally be seen because the sculpture is 16ft tall, stands on a pedestal, and is seen from below at an angle at which the face is obscured by the left hand. It is believed that Michelangelo did this on purpose, because it provided good profiles of David when seen from either side by optimising each eye for its appearance as seen from the side.

"In the classic view of the statue, looking at the right side of the face, David gazes off to his left. The view of the left profile is seldom seen these days, because it would involve looking through the wall of the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, where the statue is displayed. In its original site outside the Palazzo Vecchio it would have been visible." Opthamology and David

David Examination

Yikes! Its Worse than We Thought!

EXODEVIATION

Michelangelo sculpted with not only human anatomy and common imperfections in mind, but also with the viewing angle of the people on the ground. It wasn't until science and photography enabled us to look at David in various angles, heights, and in a variety of types of light was it discovered that David's eyes weren't 'perfect'. For non-technological viewing, David's exodeviated eyes aren't noticeable from the ground, but they contribute to his stature and posture from all sides.

History and Restoration

An Eleven Year Argument

Originally David was commissioned by the city's guild of wool merchants in 1501. Michelangelo's statue spent over 3 centuries outdoors, in the Piazza della Signoria.

David moved to the Galleria dell'Accademia, a more protective environment, in 1873, when He received his first washing.

This specific Restoration Debate raged around whether David should be cleaned at all, and whether it should be 'dry' or cleaned 'wet'. It took three years to sculpt David, and almost 12 years to figure out how to wash him.

The marble of David is very old, and even of a Poorer Quality than other marble Michelangelo used. Porousness in the marble can easily cause bad effects in restoration, and with other restoration catastrophes, experts were extremely concerned. Some said that using a water Bath on David would make his surface uniform, hiding the marble's colors, and destroy aging effects it took nearly 500 years to create.

Grubby David

Several Hundred Years and Only One Bath!

For three hundred years David remained outside, exposed to the elements (and bird doodles) in Florence. Rain water was virtually the only cleaning David ever got, until 1873, when he was moved indoors and washed with hydrochloric acid.

Anyone who goes to Europe notices the effects of industrial pollution on ancient buildings and statues, and The David was no different. His existence spanned the era of the rise of industrial pollution, coal for heating, and automobiles for transportation, and he showed it.

What Should We Do?

Science has made its contributions to the various tasks exploring the restoration of the David. For example, to discover what contaminants were on him, a Spectroscopy was commissioned. The pollutants beginning in the industrial age, air and water, have all left their traces on him. His last bath in acid, and a really good waxing, all contributed to the dirt.

The question boiled down to: what if we do nothing, what will happen to David. And, if we do something, what should it be, and what will happen to David? Destroying David

Restored David

Squeaky Clean and Ready for Company!

Cinzia Parnigoni was the restorer of the David. While this was a wonderful job, it was also high pressure, with enormous opposition. It is also such a beloved figure that Parnigoni said, "I felt so much emotion when I found myself face to face with this giant. My heart was beating too fast. I had to call the doctor.' Face to Face with the David There is much work yet to do, in the crevasses of David's hair, and with splashes of wax that were from riots and revolutions, where people stood on the statue with wax torches. Yet the David is so much cleaner, with damaging residues taken off, it is possible he'll remain, without further damage, for hundreds years more!

Restoring Michelangelo's David Statue Photo My big surprise was being contacted by an extremely talented woman, Andrys Basten, who had managed to see the David soon after his restoration was complete. Like any tourist, she took her pictures. Later she was hassled because the gallery didn't want them displayed. She handled the controversy very gracefully and has made known her gorgeous work. Restored David It is a DO NOT MISS GALLERY! Incredible!

There have been lots of ways we've had fun with David, from these "Dress Me Up David" refrigerator magnets, to David (and Venus de Milo) Squeaky toys, David has been adopted as a beloved and important cultural icon. Even after 500 years, David inspires our imaginations and inflames our souls. Now we just do it as kitsch. David Magnets More David Magnets

Wearing David

Makes a real statement...

If you consider yourself an elegant, well-sculpted Renaissance man, and would like to bring that to the mind of someone (an interviewer or investor, say) it doesn't hurt a thing to wear David yourself.

Now, you may have a crush on a man who, underneath it all, has the body of a god, and you'd like to make sure he knows you think so.

Then again, if you really want to get a guy in a tie, for a wedding or something, and he really doesn't want to, something like this probably would change his mind.

Kids and David

An element of a great education!

Kids haven't been left out of the global interest in David. Here is a page from a David and Goliath coloring book, but there are also internet activities for kids about David. Here are links to two different puzzles, one a jigsaw puzzle, the other a scramble, both of David's head.
